Wearing a face mask has now become part of the “new normal” with the continued prevalence of the novel coronavirus disease of 2019, or COVID-19. And with the overwhelming demand for face masks worldwide, there also comes the expected shortage that is also felt on a global scale. As such, sewing DIY masks have become the next option.
Please note that I am not making claims as far as the effectiveness of these DIY masks is concerned. These masks won’t totally protect you from getting a respiratory illness. For updated guidelines, head on to the CDC website.
And although it is not as effective in protecting oneself from the virus as N95 masks, and other high-end respirators, wearing a makeshift mask is better than not wearing anything at all. This is also encouraged by the authorities to make sure that medical-grade masks are reserved for the medical front liners, who are more exposed to the virus.
However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, there have been other alternatives to N95 masks that are available in the market, just like the addition of pm 2.5 filters in the DIY or makeshift masks. By using these 5-layer filters for face masks, the public can now have stronger protection to the virus than not having any filter at all, or than using other filters like tissue papers.
Also, the mask must fit perfectly to strengthen the protection that it can give to the user. And one way to ensure it is by adding a nose wire, bendable wire or a pipe cleaner. Moreover, the fabrics that are used in making the mask also play a crucial role in giving the utmost protection as possible to coronavirus.

There are several tutorials that you can find on YouTube, feel free to choose the one that is most appealing to you. But concerning the filters, it would be better if you stick with the 5-layer or PM 2.5 filters.
